HERMES RYAN AT THE CONQUEST OF THE GRAND PRIX HERMES AT JUMPING HERMES PARIS

delestredelestre2

The scenario could not be written in a more perfect way … To end in beauty the Hermes Grand Prix, very well provided, the best riders on the planet riding their best horses. SANTIAGO VALERA ULLASTRES, the new Spanish track designers assisted by GREGORY BODO proposed fluid courses, technically demanding but very respectful of the horses. The riders do non stop praising, the horses, if they could talk, would necessarily agree … The organization by GL Events was again perfect and the house HERMES elegant, refined and welcoming – thank you for the blankets offered at frozen public! Santiago Valera also had a nice word for the volunteers. Congratulations to them! Photo: press conference …

In the € 400,000 SAUT HERMES Grand Prix, 14 couples made it into the jump-off, The spectators were therefore entitled to a beautiful finale with a rather spectacular design. When coming out of a combination, you had to negotiate a very tight turn, “guarded” by an obstacle, to succeed in jumping a wall. If we opted for a large turn, we were out of the game, if we controlled too much we dropped the bars of the combination before. A real Spanish puzzle finally solved by 6 riders, the only authors of a double clear round.

MARCUS EHNING with his CORNADO NRW (WESTF) started first to draw a perfect mastered fluid course. “I thought I was fast but the young people showed me that I was not fast enough,” joked the German champion who underlines his motivation intact for the “Grand finale Parisienne”. Finally he will be 3rd in 35.72 seconds.

The first pursuers – Peder Fredricson or Harie Smolders can not beat Ehning. PEDER FREDRICSON will finish 4th in 36.46 seconds with HANSSON WL (SBS).

SIMON DELESTRE with HERMES RYAN DES HAYETTES (SF) go on the track. (SF). His horse is in great shape, he is able to bounce in a unique way and his small size is perfect to run the milimeter tight turn in front of the wall. His turn is amazing, we say that it will be very difficult, maybe even impossible, to beat him. “I particularly approached the passage of Niels and Patrice,” commented the Cavalier Hermes after the victory.

NIELS BRUYNSEELS has real ambitions for GANCIA DE MUZE (BWP), his generous and fast mare who just won a leg of the world cup last week. And this time again the daughter of Malito de Reve SF, gives everything. “It’s my fault, I badly rode the jump- off, says the Belgian rider. My two turns were not perfect, it cost us the victory … “The couple finished” only “second. We can bet that after the break, we will find them in the Parisian final.

OLIVIER ROBERT with TEMPO DE PABAN (AA) knows that he has no weapons to really fight – so he performs a very nice and fluid aerial tour in 38.25seconds which will bring him a nice 5th place. JANIKA SPRUNGER with BACARDI VDL (KWPN) takes her time on the track by exceeding 45 seconds and she will finish 6th anyway.

olivierolivier4

PATRICE DELAVEAU with AQUILA HDC (KWPN) fights like a lion and must take all the risks to try to approach the victory, but the turn in front of the wall is too tight, the jump becomes impossible, the dream of the victory crumbles but the chronometer 34.86 seconds still gives him a 7th place in the fastest 4 points at the jump-off.

“It’s really an exceptional day and an extraordinary victory for me,” says Simon. The HERMES firm supports Ryan and it’s really the happiness of winning here, in “his Parisian house”. I thank every day for having such a chance to ride a horse like Ryan. It is unique and I will do everything now to preserve it for the biggest sports events like the World Championship or the Olympics games ”

BIG STAR

BIG STAR AND SO MANY OTHER STARS IN SAINT-LO

BIG STAR4

The 2018 Stallion show presented BIG STAR, the already legendary horse of Nick Skelton, the current Olympic Champion and also of London. The heart horse of his rider, took the direction of Saint-Lô with his faithful groom, and this one did not take his eyes off his horse. No wonder Alexis Deroubaix, who was chosen to ride the “big star” during the presentation, showed a certain anxiety associated with the totally impeccable image of the stallion-rider.
BIG STAR 2
It is not every day that we have the privilege to ride such a champion! And what a pride also for the public of the breeders in Saint-Lô – the Equestrian center of La Manche, is considered the center of breeding activity of sport horses not only in France, but in Europe.
The reproductive conditions of the son of Quick Star by Nimmerdor, proposed by Equitechnic are quite dissuasive -1100 euros the straw, it is necessary to désirer it whatever it costs, but it is nice to know it is available, in a good shape and gorgeous!

THE STALLION’S SHOW IN SAINT-LO 2018

SF

The most attended show of the year have shown more stallions than the previous year – 165 stallions this year, more public, more French and foreign stud owners – we even saw this year the catalogs of the famous Paul Schockemöhle. All the stallion studs are adorned with beautiful catalogs and present as much as possible their stallions on the track. Some even make the show with the appropriate music, the Hollywood-style speech and the beautiful and chic speakers!

But the real stars are the stallions! All those beautiful horses that show their power and make us dream. It is better to have in mind some ideas about the ideal stallion you want to give to your mare before coming, otherwise the head may turn!!Here are some impressions of Saturday’s day

On February 10th and 11th, the Zangersheide studbook held, traditionally already, a stallion approval meeting in Deauville. The Normands may be curious about the Saint-Lô Stallion Show, where you will be able to admire all the important stallions of the equestrian world.

And here are some stallions approved by the jury composed of E. Levallois for France, H. Meyer for Germany and L. Tilleman for Belgium.

THE SAGA OF SEMILLY

ANNE SOPHIE AND RICHARD LEVALLOIS

ANNE SOPHIE AND RICHARD LEVALLOIS

A FAMILY MATTER…

Richard’s grandfather was a stud owner in draft horses. With the director of the stud farm of Saint-Lô at that time, they began the transformation of workhorses towards more lightness by crossing light cobs and trotters with thoroughbreds which finally resulted, after the war, in the appearance of the sport horse. Richard’s father was first and foremost a horse dealer, at that time, farmers sold their farm horses to buy tractors. He had a passion for équitation, horseback riding to participate in competitions organized by rural horse companies.

GERMAIN LEVALLOIS AND LE TOT DE SEMILLY

GERMAIN LEVALLOIS AND LE TOT DE SEMILLY

The passion for breeding came with Richard – the stud farm in Couvains was bought for this purpose in 1989. He started with his three good mares and then, with the development of the technique of embryo transfer, he had access to very good genetics.

COUVAINS STUD FARM

COUVAINS STUD FARM

THE TECHNICAL REVOLUTION OF BREEDING HAS BEGUN IN NORMANDY

Haras de Semilly was the first, along with the Pignolet family, to develop the use and commercialization of the embryo transfer technique on horses – they worked with the agricultural cooperative that practiced it on cattle. The INRA researchers did their tests in parallel but it is really here that this practice was made available to the breeders and gradually developed. The transfer of equine embryos has become commonplace throughout Europe and all around the world.

IN BREEDING, WE PRIVILEGED THE NATURE INSTEAD OF INJECTIONS

For several years, Haras de Semilly has been the largest French center for equine reproduction. On average, 700 mares pass through the stud during the breeding season.
Panneau Haras de Semilly 1

“We are often called at the end of the season” as a last chance “. We have a very good success rate of filling and thankfully, because of all the sacrifices we do ourselves… The secret of success is simply, respect for nature. Mares are often out of order, nothing works normally. The causes are many: some do not have a normal life for a mare – confined in the stall, with blankets, without contact with the congeners. Others have been deregulated by too many injections of hormones to trigger heat, to precipitate ovulation … It can work at first, but after we disrupt everything. We spend our time reprogramming them naturally. They are put on the grass – it is a very important element with the sun because they bring a lot of essential vitamins – and in a herd of horses they will better make cycle each other. They are teased by a pony – while in general they do not see the shadow of a stallion. We observe them and we check them regularly. At the end of the cycle, the ultrasound rhythm accelerates so as not to miss ovulation: every day and late at night if necessary with the help of a good team of veterinarians and we inseminate close to ovulation trying to avoid the use of hormones injections. This is a lot of work because with some mares it can take a lot of time, but do not be in a hurry if you want good results, especially when we are asked to inseminate with a single straw DOSE! With fertile stallions like Diamond it’s not a problem but with some others it’s a lot more complicated! It has also been noticed that the sons of fertile stallions are often fertile too, it is a quality that is transmitted. Freezing techniques are also very important – with Eurogen we have developed an excellent technique that allows us to earn points in post frozen sperm”

THE MENTAL BEFORE EVERYTHING

“Thirty foals are born at farm every year, which is not huge. Some French breeders give birth to the double, not to mention Paul Schockemölhe who makes hundreds. So we are not a big breeding in quantity of production. We try to bet more on quality.

LE TOT DE SEMILLY photo Monneron

LE TOT DE SEMILLY

For crossbreeds, the criterion of quality which for us is the most important and with which we started with note first stallion, the Tot de Semilly, it is the MENTAL. Even the best horse with all the strength and technique, if he does not want to do well, he will not do anything. Brave horses are needed and that is why the Normand strains are appreciated, because at their origins there are working horses and the peasants kept only the working horses which accepted very hard efforts. The SF are therefore known as easy and courageous and as such appreciated by foreigners.

LE TOT DE SEMILLY AND ERIC LEVALLOIS

LE TOT DE SEMILLY AND ERIC LEVALLOIS

In the old times we were pretty much the only ones to believe in The Tot. The breeders preferred Narcos, which had to be booked a year in advance. In hindsight, we were right to believe in Le Tot, who, because of his strength, his good balance, his natural respect and his simplicity, was revealed, despite a model that some people thought was too massive, a purebred leader.

LE TOT DE SEMILLY MODEL OF POWER AND BALANCE

LE TOT DE SEMILLY MODEL OF POWER AND BALANCE

LE TOT DE SEMILLY

LE TOT DE SEMILLY

The breed has evolved very quickly, now we look for modern horses, light, with a lot of energy, a good technique, respectful. And respect is innate. Today, even in amateur events, if you have slow and heavy horses, there is no competition. The courses are getting faster, the obstacles getting lighter, so you need electric horses that react to the slightest solicitation. But it is true that the excess of this reactivity makes that they can be easily scared and spooky and stop or be too difficult to control. The right mesure is very difficult to find and that is why exceptional horses are so rare. ”

DIAMAND DE SEMILLY WORLD EQUESTRIAN GAMES IN JEREZ 2002

DIAMAND DE SEMILLY World Equestrian Games of Jerez 2002

We still remember the video of the World Equestrian Games video in Jerez in 2002 when he became the World Champion. There was the water and then a very big oxer with a very delicate number of strides. They arrived completely in the foot of the oxer and normally, 95% of the horses would have stopped or crushed in to it. But he did not: he jumped and did everything not to touch, while it was almost impossible.

DIAMAND DE SEMILLY IN JEREZ

DIAMAND DE SEMILLY in Jerez

He passes on his qualities to his production and it is no coincidence that he was the best stallion in the world for 2 years in a row and still second this year. Given the regularity of its production and the quality of its new generations coming, it will probably be among the best for several years. In addition we are lucky that it is always so fertile. It is really a supernatural phenomenon in every way!

DIAMAND AND ERIC IN AACHEN

DIAMAND AND ERIC in Aachen

Some people said it was naughty stallion without knowing that he was orphaned and bottle-fed. If he had had a mother, he would have been like a normal and very nice horse like his father was because he also transmits an excellent character to his products.

DIAMAND IN LA BAULE 2002

DIAMAND AND ERIC in La Baule 2002

He was fed by Richard and an employee at that time – every two hours day and night. He was walking freely in the yard and coming to the window to take his bottle. Today we won’t do not do it again. In a case of misfortune like that it is absolutely necessary to find a surrogate mother. A foal bred alone has no codes, no education and quickly becomes unmanageable. We have seen some cases even worse than Diamond while he is an stallion!

DIAMAND AND ERIC IN DONAUESCHINGEN

DIAMAND AND ERIC in Donaueschingen

Despite his triple colic operation in 2008, Diamant has recovered well and has a very pleasant life. He goes every day to the paddock (he has 10 at his disposal!) And has a meal more in the day and in the evening, in boxing, as he must not eat straw or shavings,we made him a rubber mattress with air underneath. A 4 * hotel!

STALLIONS IN PLETHORICAL OFFER AND BREEDERS MORE AND MORE LOST

“The catalogs of stallions are becoming more beautiful and more and more provided but it is increasingly difficult to make new crossings and to break in new stallions. This is worrying for the future of French breeding. Abroad, the stallions of 2 and 3 years approved breed more than in France and it is thanks to their good test on progeny that people realize the qualities of their production and that they can hope to break through . Young French stallions are breeding 20-40 mares which is not significant and breeders prefer foreign stallions to fashion. Fortunately, foreigners are looking for the original SF! In competition, the French blood is also appreciated.

QUEBRACHO SEMILLY AND KATHARINA OFFEL CSIO Dublin

QUEBRACHO SEMILLY AND KATHARINA OFFEL CSIO Dublin

On our side we relativize the fashion and we follow our idea for our own breeding, but we agree that to get a young stallion out of the lot, we must create a fashion, a desire.

QUEBRACHO SEMILLY FONTAINEBLEAU 7 years championship

The opening abroad is a good thing if you import the best and if you mix it with French blood. The problem is that when they are very good it is difficult to have them in France, but if you import what they do not want anymore, we risk to degrade the breed. However, the majority of breeders do not know what is the true quality of all these imported stallions. If they produce medium foals, hard to be sold, they will disgust the breeders and stop using them.

The Saint-Lô Stallion Show is a magnificent storefront. It is the largest show in France and Europe. There are many foreign visitors. The site is perfect and the show is very well organized, so it is a major event for all professionals and enthusiasts of breeding. What bothers me is the way the stud owner present their horses. It’s good to know how to present and praise the merits of each stallion, it makes show too, but if you say anything it’s a shame and lie to the breeders to sell the coverings it really bothers me.

ANDIAMO SEMILLY -A MODERN SPORT MODEL

Andiamo Semilly is the one who stands out the most in our group of young horses. It presents the qualities of Diamant but in more modern, more sport. His maternal line brings back the blood of Rantzau, which is a very good asset. He transcends himself on the ring. He is an easy horse, brave and intelligent: a sport horse par excellence.

Captain Semilly with his beautiful model, his strength, his flexibility and a lot of charisma. For now, he has trouble focusing himself on competitions because he has a lot of blood and the covering turns his head a little. We must give him time. I am still thinking of Papillon Rouge, who has never done anything until age of 8 and who has revealed himself afterwards. In our profession we have to know how to adapt to each horse and also to be patient … ”

OLIVIER MARTIN: I’VE ALWAYS LOVED TO RIDE STALLIONS

ANDIAMO SEMILLY IN FONTAINEBLEAU CHAMPIONSSHIP

ANDIAMO SEMILLY IN FONTAINEBLEAU CHAMPIONSHIPS

WITH THE HARAS DE SEMILLY YOU ARE IN CONFIDENCE

It was Eric Levallois who taught me to ride well and I spent 4 years in these stables we are right now, property of Germain Levallois in Saint-Lô as an employee. Then I went for a tour in Europe; Germany and Belgium, like St Hermelle breeding stable and then I came back here again at the request of Richard Levallois. The German experience and the opportunity to participate in their competitions has been very beneficial for me. First I worked with René’s Tebbel team and later with Marc Bettinger. The first experience taught me the importance of the good organization and the second one gave me a good vision of working with horses, much less constrained than René Tebbel.

With Anne-Sophie and Richard Levallois we work with confidence and mutual respect, we trust each other – we always try to find an agreement even in case of divergent opinions. They give me freedom for the sport evolution of the horses that are entrusted to me and I take care of them as if they were mine. It’s a big responsibility so it’s rare that I can take a day off …

THE STALLIONS ARE MY PREFERENCE

I always liked to ride stallions. They are more difficult at the beginning, but when they mature and when you have them with you, they trust you, they give more and progress more. Currently in the high level we put a lot on the stallions – it’s a big business. We look at them a lot, they mark our spirits. I see already at my level that they take the attention during the shows, people come to me and they explain to me that they have a mare that could perhaps be suitable for him …

ANDIAMO DURING MASTERS IN SAINT LO

In everyday work they are more delicate, there are moments of doubt, questioning, going backwards, I return to ask them simple things, basic work and in general I catch up them quickly and progress forward. In the summer, I use a lot the big field behind the stables to work in the movement, forward, simply, and straight to give freedom and change their ideas.

With stallions, discipline is important. we can not let them do whatever they want. And it is important to reward them twice more and give them freedom. This is how they evolve and gain confidence. If we stay only on the forbidden, they get angry. In competition, even if you cannot see it, I give them small indications to reward them when they do good things. A little caress, a word of encouragement and they are happy and give themselves even more. With Andiamo Semilly, Artiste de l’Abbaye and Away Semilly, these stallions who start to be known, I have developed a real complicity. It’s great but it’s a day-to-day work, long term and a permanent challenge. Especially with those who have a lot of personality. And personality often goes hand in hand with quality. As I know them by heart, I try to optimize their good sides rather than strive to improve their weaknesses. It is the job of the rider to adapt himself to the horse. For example Away Semilly who arrived this year in the final of the 7 years, gave me a huge personal satisfaction because no one believed in this possibility.

AWAY SEMILLY

AWAY SEMILLY THE REVELATION OF THIS YEAR

SPORT OBJECTIVE

The goal is to improve them as much as possible. On look forward to jump 140 m, even more and if they are ready to do higher level, we will entrust them to another top rider. The sport is necessary to improve the visibility and value of the stallion, the sport results are important. And to have good results, you must not miss the beginning. A 3 years if they have quality they are also lively and not easy so we can easily miss a crack horse. It is not so simple to follow the evolution of young horses, otherwise everyone could pretend to become a trainer …

I AM A BRETON AND TENACE

WITH ARTISTE DE L'ABBAYE AT HOME

WITH ARTISTE DE L’ABBAYE AT HOME

I am original from Bretagne and I am quite stubborn. I like having goals and trying to achieve them in the personal and professional life. My father was a veterinarian, he had some horses at home for his pleasure. I start riding when I was 11 years old and I soon decided to become a professional rider. I also like coaching, I like to train people. For the technique, I work with Bruno Rocuet, I appreciate his rigor.

LOOKING FORWARD BEAUTIFUL GRAND PRIX

My long-term goal is to do good sport and beautiful Grand Prix. Have young horses but also confirmed horses to participate in the beautiful competitions. Fortunately our region offers us many opportunities to make beautiful events at all levels. I also like the idea of progression and turnover – train the horses, ride them in the Grand Prix, sell them. The life of professional rider is an eternal evolution and I like that …

JUMP ALLIANCE

It has been 10 years since I started working at Haras du Barquet. First I rented some boxes at Benjamin Ghelfi and then, with Benjamin and Rudy Cock, we set up the project to expand the facilities and create Jump Alliance – and it has been working for 3 years. We enjoy beautiful, comfortable facilities, a club house that allows you to spend a pleasant warm time during the cold winter. For us it is important the comfort of the horses and also of the human who takes care of them.

THE QUESTION OF DOING SOMETHING ELSE HAD NO SENS FOR ME

My parents were farmers in the Manche region, my father was a horse enthusiast, he also bred and competed. He started Flambeau C! He had to stop his riding career by taking over the family farm. And I was seduced since when I was little …

WITH STELLA LYGHT FROM THE FAMILY STOOD FARM

WITH STELLA LYGHT FROM THE FAMILY STOOD FARM

I had the chance to enjoy the teaching and advice of good riders of the time. I took riding lessons with Jacky Angot, the father of Angot brothers and then with the father of Julien Epaillard to perfection my equitation. Subsequently, with good horses from the family breeding, I was able to benefit from the coaching of Eric Navet, Hervé Godignon and I had the chance to work with Gilles Bertrand de Balanda.

WE HAVE THE PRIVILEGE TO DO WHAT WE LOVE

We have been trough hard times but I have never thought to stop riding. When I arrived here, for example, after coming back from Michel Hécart, I found myself with 2 horses and it was necessary to rebuild everything. But life it’s like that, the hard knocks make us gain experience. It’s a privilege to do what we love, even if it’s non-stop 7 days a week and 24 hours a day. When we have good horses, we remain motivated without problems.

FX DEUVILLE OK

Today my goal is to be at the highest level but we must always keep a foot in young horses to train the next generation. When you do not have a sponsor to buy quality horses you have to make them. I enjoy all aspects from the horse life: breeding, young horse training, high level competitions. The high level however brings complications … At the level of 2 * or 3 * we can bring a lot of horses to the show so it’s manageable, but at the 5 * level only two horses are allowed, the organization becomes difficult.

IT’S IMPORTANT TO TAKE YOUR TIME, ESPECIALLY WITH YOUNG HORSES

My method of working with young horses is pretty simple – but you have to do it right, and it’s not that easy. Everything is based on the daily rigor, the repetition of things to do or not to do. And they end up accepting this way of working. This is done naturally, but they need time to learn, to get in shape, to build muscle … And they do not all learn at the same speed, we must really adapt the training to each horse and make sure that the owner is happy. I am lucky to have owners like B Lecourtois or Mr. Poitau who follow me for ten years, so in general, the atmosphere is good. At the stable I currently have 4 to 5 horses per age group. The final at Fontainebleau is for them a goal of training, not a goal of victory. We try to prepare them well and we bring them when we think they are ready. Obviously, when we win, it’s a very nice moment but I do not set this goal from the start.

I have been training young horses for years and I was lucky to see some of them evolve at the highest level. Nasa, a mare that we bought from Michel Hecart and who became a champion with Steve Guerdat in Calgari and Aachen.

NASA’S DESTINY

Kalaska de Semilly was given to me and I rode her at 5 and 6 years old. He had already been the champion at age 4 and showed potential from the start. He was easy, brave and powerful and she jumped the Olympics Games with a amateur rider. It’s still nice to have trained the horses that made the Olympics thereafter, like Maestro Saint-Lois for example.

PARTICIPATING AGAIN IN THE BEAUTIFUL SHOWS

My goals is to jump properly the horses and do again the beautiful shows. The dream would be to join the team of France and jump the Nations Cups. I can currently count on Ciento my head horse that I ride since he was 4 years old. He has a lot of blood, he is a very sensitive horse who was afraid of everything and we had to build him physically and psychologically. Vertige de Galarzac, 8 years old, arrived this year in my stables and we started jumping well 145 m classes.I also count on the coming up of Stella Lyght who was born in the family breeding which was champion of Six-year-old, third of the seven-year-old, who jumped Nations Cups and won one – she was stopped for an injury and she starts jumping again at 140-145m. There is also Amant du Château GFE who returns after his breeding season and we are preparing him for the Championships of 7-8 years in Bordeaux. Chacco Rouge I used to ride him, he has recently trusted to me by the Megret family, so I am very well equipped with quality horses.

But to make beautiful shows, even those of 5 * is not a goal in itself, I already have some experience. I want to go there only if I have a chance to do something right with my horses …
